The basic idea of pirate flags was to serve as a warning and to instill fear into the prey's hearts. A black flag meant that if you surrendered quickly, mercy would be shown to you. A red flag meant just the opposite- no matter how quickly you surrendered, there would be no mercy.
 
Each pirate had his own flag, and today some are still widely recognized.
